Meet the incredible team of locals who help bring Snowbasin by UTMB to life!

What inspired Snowbasin by UTMB?

We wanted to show off some of the best of what Snowbasin, Ogden City, and Weber County have to offer.
 
What do you love about your race/what makes it special? 

Snowbasin is home to diverse trails that are runnable, yet challenging.  They offer diverse flora and fauna, from sagebrush down low to aspens, firs, and alpine rock up top.  In addition, we have a great volunteer community that rallies around events, so when you combine the trails, views, and community, we really have something special here in Ogden, Utah to showcase to the world.
 
What is your favorite part of race weekend at Snowbasin by UTMB? 

This is our inaugural year, but I can already tell you one of my favorite parts of all events I put on are the people you get to meet, and witnessing folks overcome and achieve challenging things they may have doubted were possible before that day!
 
What is your favorite part of your race’s course? 

Upper Needles trail is fantastically beautiful, both of our courses pass through this area.
 
Why should someone sign up for your race? 

This race showcases some of our area’s best trails, and in addition, our community will be coming out to help make your race memorable.  Snowbasin is also hosting their annual Oktoberfest the same weekend which runners get complimentary entry to. So after you finish your epic run, you can mosey into Oktoberfest for food, drink, and music with our spectacular mountain backdrop!

How long have you been an RD? 

I’ve been a full time Race Director for about 11 years now…time flies!
 
What is your favorite race?

I’ve had many wonderful races over the years.  I’m specifically drawn to technical mountain races.  Tushars 100k is a stellar event in southern Utah, Superior 100 in Northern Minnesota is a race I’ve run multiple times because it’s so dang cool (and one of the older 100’s in existence), but I was fortunate enough to run UTMB in Chamonix in 2022, and that was a real treat.  The atmosphere, the global running tribe that descends on that town, and the magnificence of the mountains make it one of my top races I’ve participated in.

What is your favorite activity outside of RD’ing or running?

I like gardening, singing and playing guitar, hiking and watching movies with my wife, and keeping our 2009 Prius running strong!
 
What is your favorite genre of music? 

I’m a sucker for any and all music, but I grew up listening to grunge, and specifically enjoy Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and Audioslave.
 
What is an interesting face about yourself that is not generally known?

If pushing around porto potty was an Olympic sport, well then you might just see me on NBC every 4 years!

We can’t wait to share our region with such a passionate group of athletes and supporters.

What inspired you to start your race?

My organizations mission is to collaborate with the national stage to bring and host events like this to our town, it's who we are and what we do at the core.  We're thrilled to have this partnership come together after a 3 plus year journey of working through the details.

What do you love about Snowbasin by UTMB and what makes it special?  

Having the terrain and trails in our "backyard" and being able to share this space with a global audience. We get to play here anytime we want being so close, welcoming the world to the area is humbling and an honor.
 
What is your favorite part of race weekend at Snowbasin? 

It's all amazing, but seeing the athletes at peak sections of the course is amazing.  The grit, focus, excitement and determination they bring makes it extra special to offer the opportunity for them to be here with us.
 
What is your favorite part of your race’s course? 

 The saddle above Needles looking into Ogden
 
Why should someone sign up for your race? 

This race takes you through a variety of Northern Utah ecosystems at a world class resort with incredible amenities and scenery.  With Ogden being the hub of our outdoor recreational activities, it has everything you'll need to have a fantastic weekend.   

What is your favorite race? 

Snowbasin of course!

What is your favorite activity outside of RD’ing or running? 

Alpine Skiing 

What is your favorite movie and why? 

Snatch; Undergound boxing of course!  But overall it's truly witty, has a great cast and the twist and turns.

What is your favorite genre of music? 

Classic Rock

We're blessed with this area everyday and sharing it with the world on race day is going to be exceptional.

What inspired you to get involved with Snowbasin by UTMB? 

I’ve lived, trained, raced, coached, and directed events in this community for years, so when the opportunity came to help bring a UTMB event to Snowbasin on the trails I know and love, I wanted to be part of it. As Volunteer Director, I especially love getting people involved in the other side of trail running, the community of volunteers who make these races possible. There is something really special about welcoming runners from all over the world to our backyard and showing them what this community is all about. 

What do you love about your race/what makes it special? 

The setting. Snowbasin and the mountains surrounding Ogden are spectacular, but what makes this race especially meaningful to me is that these aren't just race day trails. These are the mountains where we run, hike, ski, train, and play in all year long. Getting to share this landscape with runners coming from around the country and the world feels incredibly special. 

What is your favorite part of race weekend at Snowbasin? 

Watching all the pieces come together. As Volunteer Director, I will get to see how many people it actually takes to create a race experience. From aid stations and course crews to start/finish volunteers and people working behind the scenes. I love seeing volunteers become part of a runner's story, especially when they realize that something seemingly small they did may have helped someone get to the finish line. 

What is your favorite part of your race’s course? 

Moonshine Bowl is a sweet spot on both the 28K and 58K courses, around mile 10. After climbing through an open grassy section, you suddenly turn into this gorgeous, almost surprising grove of aspens. I love the sound of their leaves blowing in the wind and it almost feels like they’re singing to you. On race morning, the sun will be coming through at just the right time to light up the fall colors and make the whole grove glow. It’s one of those places that can completely take your breath away. 

Why should someone sign up for your race? 

Because this is an opportunity to experience northern Utah in a way most visitors never do. The course is beautiful, rugged, challenging, and incredibly rewarding. You get big mountain terrain and huge views, but you also get the energy and support of a community that genuinely loves these mountains and wants you to succeed. We’re excited to share our backyard with you. 

How long have you been involved with endurance races? 

I’ve been the race director for Running Up For Air Malans Peak here in Ogden for nine years, and I’ve been involved in endurance events, volunteer management, and the running community for much longer than that.  

What is your favorite race and/or your favorite running experience? 

The UTMB World Series Finals in Chamonix has to be high on the list. I ran it in 2018, and it was one of the hardest and most extraordinary running experiences I’ve ever had. There is magic moving through the mountains around Mont Blanc and through three countries, surrounded by runners and communities from all over the world. Coming back to race it again this year makes being involved with Snowbasin by UTMB even more meaningful. 

What is your favorite activity outside running? 

Cooking. We’re a busy, active family of four, so food is a big part of keeping everyone fueled and moving, but it’s also a creative outlet for me. I love the combination of making something good and feeding people I love. 

What is your favorite movie and why? 

I’m actually not a huge movie person, so picking a favorite is hard. O Brother, Where Art Thou? is always a favorite, Big Hero 6 has a special place in my heart, and I love A Quiet Place. Apparently, my movie taste is a little all over the place. 

What is your favorite genre of music? 

Indie folk and classic rock. I’m also a complete sucker for anything acoustic with great harmonies. Give me a guitar and voices that sound good together and I’m probably listening. 

What is an interesting fact about yourself that is not generally known? 

One fun fact is that I worked for the SLC Winter Olympic Committee for the 2002 Winter Games in charge of writing, training and directing the volunteer program that trained our 30,000 Team 2002 volunteers. That was just an amazing experience early in my career that I'll cherish forever. More than two decades later, I’m still organizing volunteers for big sporting events, only now we’re on trails instead of Olympic venues.

I'm excited to welcome runners to the mountains and trails I call home.
